On Tuesday November 21st, members of the German Club and their parents along with Mr. Conn and Mr. Schochet met to make and eat German food at the Black Forest Inn in Stanhope, NJ.  Chef Heinz Aichem, assisted by his son and co-chef Heiner, kicked off the evening with a lesson on goulash in their restaurant’s kitchen. Afterwards, he introduced the group to kohlrabi, a root vegetable which he cooked in a white sauce. Next, he made the dough of the Semmel Knödel with a twist: the addition of eggs. The German Club members formed dough into spheres the size of tennis balls which Herr Aichem simmered in water. He then showed us how to grill Zwiebelrostbraten (steak topped with fried onions). We then moved to the restaurant’s dining room where we ate the food, which was spectacular. The night concluded with a delicious Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) accompanied by vanilla ice cream. Finally, Heiner told us about his encounter with a ghost in the very room where we were seated. We all left the Black Forest Inn sated and spooked.
