Wave Soccer Downs Pingry in State Quarterfinals

Christian Agathis, Staff Writer

Green is greater than blue. This fact was proven last Thursday when the Green Wave varsity soccer team defeated the Pingry Big Blue. The team played at Ryan Field in front of hundreds of high school students, their parents and friends, as all prepared to watch Delbarton triumph over Pingry.   All Delbarton students and faculty were dismissed from school at 1:56 in order to support the team in their match.  Their expectations became a reality.

Although the game wasn’t a high scoring affair, the Wave was still able to dismantle Pingry. The defense stood tall against the Blue’s forwards and allowed very few shots, and the midfielders and forwards kept the ball in the offensive half for the majority of the game. It took until the second half for the Wave to score, but senior captain Charles Cadena scored on  a volley that caused the crowd to go wild, and Ethan Fabricant also netted a goal.

This quarterfinal win pushed the Varsity Soccer Team one step closer to the NJSIAA championship. The semifinal game is  away at Bergen Catholic and will be on November 7th. After an impressive win against Oratory Prep, Bergen Catholic will be a tough team to beat, but the Green Wave is more than capable. The team is now 4-3 in tournament games, but a very impressive 15-4 overall.

Stay tuned for a postseason wrap-up.
