Doctor Strange Movie Review
December 13, 2016
After experiencing the movie Doctor Strange, one thing is certainly clear: Marvel knows how to make a great movie! Doctor Strange tells the story of Stephen Strange, a world-renowned neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in a horrific car accident. Strange uses his entire fortune to find a successful treatment, but he ultimately fails. After tracking down a man who was able to walk again after a spinal injury, Strange goes to Kathmandu and learns sorcery from the Ancient One. With his great skill in sorcery, Strange is able to foil the plans of Kaecilius and stop the evil Dormammu.
This film is yet another Marvel production that has exceeded all expectations. Although the movie seems like an overdone origin story, lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant in his role as Doctor Strange. His acting and the script made the character’s transformation from arrogant to heroic enjoyable and exciting to watch. The other cast members such as Tilda Swinton, Chitwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelson also did an incredible job. Visually, the movie was stunning. The movie’s director Scott Derrickson did a great job of creating Inception-like scenes in vibrant and various colors, which fully immersed the viewer.
Unfortunately, the film also had its downsides. Like other Marvel movies, the villain Kaecilius felt cliché with his “ultimate plan to destroy the world.” To have the villain introduced and then defeated in the same movie wastes the potential of the character. The character feels underdeveloped and unmemorable.
Overall, Doctor Strange was a great movie. Although it had problems with its antagonist, the film was led by its incredibly talented cast, mind-bending visuals, and adroit direction. Anybody who enjoys the superhero genre of movies would certainly enjoy this action offering. Overall Rating: 8.75/10
