Wave Basketball Wins JP Flynn Tournament
January 5, 2017
The JP Flynn Memorial Basketball Tournament championship game tipped off shortly after 6:30 on Thursday night, December 27th. Before the action began, however, fans, players and coaches paid tribute to the late JP Flynn, who perished on the tragic Pan Am Flight 103. JP was a son, a brother, a Delbarton alumni, and most specifically, the varsity basketball captain. So, it was only fitting that the current Delbarton squad had an opportunity to square off against Wayne Valley for the tournament title in JP’s name.
As fans settled in, the Green Wave and Wayne Valley heated up. Each respective possession seemed to result in a game tying basket, a steal, or a scrap for the ball resulting with players on the hardwood. No single player seemed to dominate the ball for either team, and the Green Wave slowly pulled ahead towards the end of the third quarter. Senior Matt Douglas contributed to the Green Wave’s offensive force with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Ryan Criqui and Davis bell were a consistent threat from outside the arc. Jaedan Khubani represented the Green Wave’s younger talent with 15 points and some impressive handles of the ball at point guard.
The Green Wave’s team effort resulted in a 58-48 victory over respected opponent Wayne Hills. In honor of JP Flynn, Green Wave Basketball simply got the job done on Thursday night, and the varsity basketball squad will continue to work towards a successful season as the winter progresses.
Thank you for all those who attended Thursday game in remembrance of JP Flynn. It was certainly special night.
