The Delbarton Winter Sports Season had its fair share of ups and downs but, overall, proved to be a successful one. Let’s take a look at how each team fared during the 2018-19 winter season.

To kick it off, the Green Wave Basketball team finished with an overall record of 18-8 and a conference record of 9-3. With this record, the team finished second in their NJAC conference, behind only Sparta. Senior Jaedon Khubani was top-2 on the team in both field goals and 3-pointers made, notching 99 field goals and 36 3-pointers. After defeating Paramus Catholic in the first round, the team lost against a very talented Bergen Catholic in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Tournament.

Delbarton’s hockey team ended the season 19-7-4 in a heartbreaking State Final loss to Don Bosco over Spring Break. The Wave was trying to get back at Bosco after they made an almost impossible comeback against the Wave, beating them in the Gordon Cup finals. However, with a terrific rising senior class, Wave hockey looks to be on the up and up for next year.

As many people know, the Delbarton squash team was tremendously successful this past season, winning the National Championship. The team was 11th out of 16 in their division, which, instead of discouraging the athletes, motivated them to perform better than everyone else at the National Championship weekend, described by Junior player Peter Gajewski as a “weekend … that none of us will ever forget.” For the full story about the Squash team this past year, check out Peter’s article, which can be found in the Sports section of the Courier website.

Much like Delbarton’s other winter sports teams, the Wave Winter Track Team had a successful year, with juniors and seniors alike leading the charge. Senior Justin Yazdi started the season tremendously, placing 1st in the 55m race at the Lid Lifter at Drew University. Along with this amazing accolade, Yazdi placed in the top 5 on numerous occasions throughout the season. In addition, Juniors Steven Daly and Harrison Vives, as well as the rest of the Distance Crew, ran very well this past season, earning the team points at almost every meet. Notably, Daly finished 1st at the FAT Invitational and 8th at the State Meet of Champions, very difficult and competitive honors to achieve.

The Delbarton Swimming team had an almost perfect 2018-19 season, going 10-1 with their biggest win coming against Parsippany High School by a score of 125-45. The team finished 3rd at States at Lawrenceville and finished the season with a close victory over Hanover Park, coming out on top 87-83. Seniors Thomas Shepanzyk and Jack Alexy led the way at the Tournament of Champions, placing well in several events.

The Wave’s wrestlers had a fantastic season, both as a team and individually, as they racked up 14 wins and 3 losses. The team won the Morris County Championship and had 10 wrestlers advance to the NJ State Championships, an extremely impressive feat. At the championships, not only did the team have a record 8 medalists, but Junior Anthony Clark finished 2nd place in the entire tournament for his weight class (120 pounds).

Despite a rocky 2-2 start, the Delbarton Bowling Squad also finished with a very strong performance, notching 9 wins and 4 losses. The bowling team swept the season series against several of the Wave’s rivals, including Madison, Morris Hills, and Chatham.
