Extra, extra, read all about it!
Most of you are probably familiar with this phrase, having heard about it in your social studies classes or from historical literature. A common catchphrase that reflects (or, at least, used to) the essence of journalism in the days before the internet, texting and Twitter/X. Paperboys from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries used to run about in city streets, shouting and waving to grab peoples’ attention and sell newspapers.
In the modern era, however, new forms of journalism have emerged. Specifically, online news and social media have become the primary means of information due to the convenience at which articles can be posted without having to pay for printing or shipping costs. However, some have seen this change as harmful for the literary world and journalistic industry; by taking away the physical action of holding the paper and being able to touch the ink, people become literally and, potentially, metaphorically detached from what they are reading. In the modern world, it is extremely easy to simply look up topics you are interested in through search engines and the unparalleled wireless library of information. However, it is easy to get lost in all of the jumbles of different subjects and long explanations and analysis.
In response, we at the Courier have decided to launch paper copies! Editions will be released about once a month and handed out Friday mornings along with the sandwich sales by the Senior Council. Rather than fully returning to traditional paper newspaper systems, these “newsletters” will provide short snippets of articles posted within that month’s time frame. Our main aim is simply to garner interest and notify the student body about themes of interest within the school community and the world beyond.
Below, you can find a digital copy of our first issue. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to reach out to Kevin Jin ‘25 at [email protected] or Mr. Wyatt at [email protected]. Don’t forget to grab a paper copy as you walk into school whenever they’re released!
