Thanksgiving is the time to express our gratitude to the people we love as well as our family and friends. In the United States, a big turkey is traditionally roasted with side dishes such as mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, baked string beans, and so on. On the other hand, different regions and countries have their own style of celebrating Thanksgiving. Below are three of the most unique Thanksgiving foods people eat around the world.
Songpyeon
Thanksgiving in South Korea is known as ‘Chuseok’. In addition to eating traditional Korean foods, families also make a mochi-like sweet called Songpyeon. It is made of ground rice that is kneaded into small balls filled with nuts, sesame seeds, and a sweet red bean paste. Steamed on top of a bed of pine needles, they release a citrusy fragrance of autumn that quickly lifts up the holiday spirit.
Warm Dr. Pepper Delight
When the sales for Dr. Pepper started to drop, the president of the company, Wesby Parker, decided to promote Dr. Pepper as a hot drink to serve it as a cozy winter beverage. Many families around the world began to heat up Dr. Pepper and pour it over thin lemon slices. Filled with the aroma of sweet vanilla and the scent of fresh lemons, it seems that Warm Dr. Pepper Delights tastes better than it might sound.
Bologna Cake
Bologna can be found in sandwiches, burgers, and casseroles. But did you know that it can also be found in cakes? Bologna Cake was first introduced to the United States in the South and was featured in the famous romcom, Sweet Home Alabama. Content creators piled slices of bologna and cream cheese, topped with a drizzle of ranch dressing, as a Thanksgiving dessert. Shockingly, this practical joke became popular late in the 20th century despite sounding unappetizing to many.
