Super Bowl LIX is set to feature a compelling rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. This game not only revisits their Super Bowl LVII matchup, which the Chiefs won 38-35, but also presents the Chiefs with an opportunity to secure an unprecedented three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
Kansas City Chiefs:
The Chiefs concluded the regular season with an impressive 15–2 record, securing the AFC’s top seed and home-field advantage. Their postseason journey included victories over the Houston Texans (23–14) and a narrow win against the Buffalo Bills (32–29) in the AFC Championship Game, also now nicknamed the “Kansas City Invitational” by NFL fans due to the game being there every single day year. This season further solidified their dominance, marking their fifth Super Bowl appearance in six years. However, their success has led to discussions about refs’ “bias” towards the Chiefs, calling the games in their favor and making calls to better their chances.
Stars to Watch: Over the regular season, Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions, and maintained a passer rating of 93.5. His leadership and ability to execute under pressure during the playoffs have been pivotal in the Chiefs’ pursuit of a historic third consecutive championship. Chiefs Tight End, Travis Kelce, also concluded the 2024 NFL regular season with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns, showing a decline from previous 1000-yard seasons. But, with Kelce and Mahomes’s connection, they will continue to be a very important factor for the Eagles’s defense to control the game on Sunday. (Don’t forget about Taylor Swift).
Philadelphia Eagles:
Finishing the regular season at 14–3, the Eagles entered the playoffs as the NFC’s second seed. They triumphed over the Green Bay Packers (22–10) and the Los Angeles Rams (28–22), and finally a commanding (get it?) 55–23 victory against the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game, which was a record-setting performance for points scored in a conference championship. The Eagles have demonstrated resilience and growth throughout the season, showcasing a very strong offense and run game and a solid defense filled with star rookies.
Stars to Watch: Saquon Barkley has been a transformative force for the Philadelphia Eagles since joining the team this season. In his first season with the Eagles, Barkley led the NFL with 2,005 rushing yards on 345 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt, and scoring 13 touchdowns. Barkley’s impact extended into the postseason, where he had 442 rushing yards and five touchdowns over three games, averaging 147.3 yards per game. It is safe to say the Eagles would probably not be where they are right now without Barkley (also it’s his birthday Sunday in the Super Bowl so he will definitely be rushing for 200+ yards).
My Opinion:
As a diehard Cowboys fan, I am still sickened by the fact the Eagles are in the Super Bowl once again. No part of me was rooting for the Eagles to come out of the NFC, I would have rathered it to be rookie Jayden Daniels and the Commanders, but unfortunately, this is the team that will be representing the NFC this year in the big game. On the other hand, the Cheifs have had it their way all year, and honestly, every single year. They keep finding ways to win games, but there comes a point where you can’t hate greatness anymore from Patrick Mahomes, it’s insane to watch him every year dominate the NFL and solidify him as one of the best Quarterbacks of all time already. With that being said, I will be rooting for the Chiefs to beat the Eagles, but I do think Saquan will be a huge problem for the Chiefs to contain, potentially losing them the game. Although I am rooting for the Cheifs, I am taking the Eagles to win the game 29-27 in a close matchup, but ultimately the Lombardi Trophy will be going back to Philly.
