According to NJ.com, the Delbarton Green Wave Wrestling program finished with an impressive 23-4 record for the 2024-2025 wrestling season. Within those 27 matches came excitement, history, and heartbreak. To begin the season, Delbarton dominated in tournaments around the country, beating nationally ranked teams and winning the Catholic School Duals along the way. In their first 22 matches of the season, the Green Wave lost only once. The team they were defeated by was arguably the best squad in the country, ranked in the top three on the lists of many notable sources, including Sports Illustrated.
In the second half of the season, the Green Wave defeated Blair Academy in a 30-29 thriller, capped off by an August Moser clinic in the heavyweight round. Read more about this historic victory in my previous article, “Mayhem in Morristown!!”
The Green Wave’s win against Blair propelled them into the NJSIAA Non-Public A Team Tournament, where Delbarton succeeded in overwhelming fashion in the quarterfinals and semifinals by team scores of 61-9 and 45-17, respectively. In the championship, Delbarton faced a nationally recognized St. Joseph Regional team and lost in the tightly contested final bout, 30-26.
Despite a heartbreaking conclusion to a storied season, Delbarton’s athletes were able to put the previous results aside and focus on the individual tournament in Atlantic City. In qualifying for the tournament, the wrestling team broke a New Jersey state record by sending the entire team to Atlantic City. To achieve this feat, Delbarton had all 14 members of the team qualify and place in the top four of their region brackets.
Once in Atlantic City, each Delbarton wrestler displayed the grit and determination they were taught, and some talented athletes were crowned the best in the state for their weight class. Cameron Sontz (113) added to his already impressive résumé with his second consecutive state championship as a sophomore. Sontz capped off his season with a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Charles Esposito of St. Joseph Regional. Next, Jayden James (150) captured his third consecutive state championship by fall in 1:50. With a state championship victory next year, James could join an elite list of wrestlers who won their weight class each of their four years. Finally, Alessio Perentin (165) defeated A.J. Falcone of CBA to win the state title by a 12-3 major decision. In doing so, Perentin secured his third state championship in his four years with the Green Wave.
Delbarton had seven additional medalists. Ryan DeGeorge (132) lost in the finale to finish in 2nd place. Tommy Marchetti (120) claimed 3rd place. PJ Terranova (106) also finished in 3rd place. Chase Quenault (138) reached the semifinals before finishing in 3rd place. Nick Schwartz (144) finished in 5th place. Trevor Jones (157) earned 8th place. CJ Betz (190) advanced to the semifinals and finished in 3rd place.
Jesse DeNegri (175) and Elbrus Majagah (215) fell short and lost in the “blood round” (placement round). Both August Moser (285) and Brayden Jones (126) battled through tough matches but ultimately fell short.
Overall, the Green Wave capped their season on a high note, breaking state records and recording three state champions, among many other high-placement wrestlers.
