For most viewers, the Minecraft movie was either a hit or miss. As soon as the film debuted on April 4, 2025, thousands of people rushed to the movie theater to witness the anticipated blockbuster movie of the month. Memes and shorts were created to highlight the “cringy” aspects of the movie. In the film, four misfits accidently find themselves trapped in the magical overworld of Minecraft. Soon enough in their journey, they meet a man named Steve (Jack Black). Together, the five find themselves embarking on quests and battles to hopefully survive in the world of Minecraft for a chance to make it back home.
Before moving on to the negative aspects of the movie, let’s first talk about the positive. First, the actors chosen for the roles of Steve and the four Misfits were absolutely perfect. Jack Black’s sense of humor paired so well with Jason Momoa’s (Garett Garrison) charm and Emma Myer’s (Natalie) subtle wit. Second, the CGI used in the movie was well done. Many viewers were skeptical that generating the cubicle shape of each block would look too unnatural, possibly leading to the whole Minecraft setting to seem unappealing. Luckily, the movie was able to perfectly blend the idea of fantasy and realism together. Third, the plot of the story tied well with the actual adventure of the game Minecraft. None of the story elements and animations were drastically changed, leaving the audience to ponder in their own imaginations. According to some sources, 84% of audience members liked the film.
Unfortunately, the Minecraft movie had more downs than ups. Just by watching the trailer, we knew that there were going to be a lot of cringe-worthy moments. For example, the chicken + lava moment. Sure, these moments were what made the movie blow up on the internet, but it was too much for me to handle personally. Furthermore, even though the movie tried to play to a more family-oriented demographic, most of the people at the movie theaters were young children accompanied by their parents or rowdy teenagers. Finally, even though the plot of the story was thought out and well executed, I believe that there could be even more adventure. Instead of the crew battling the “piglins” in the nether, maybe they had to battle the Ender Dragon in the end. This may be the next great idea if Minecraft 2 is in the works..
All in all, the Minecraft movie was an enjoyable experience. I loved that the movie theaters were packed with adolescents, waiting to throw their popcorn into the air when the iconic scenes, such as “Chicken Jockey” or “I Am Steve”, came onto the screen. Luckily, with the Minecraft movie breaking the box office and making waves amongst the movie fans, it is possible that Minecraft 2 might come out in the not too distant future.
