Each year, an event known as the Met Gala is hosted to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year a ticket cost attendees $75,000 according to news reports. Famous celebrities from around the world come to the exhibit with exotic costumes ready to shine on the red carpet. The theme this year for 2025 was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, an idea used to highlight the importance of tailoring in shaping black identities through black dandyism. In this article, I will be judging the best and worst costumes in the 2025 Met Gala.
Best
- Lewis Hamilton
Not only was this look majestic, but also intricately designed. The pay-attention to detail on the silky white suit paired perfectly with the jewelry on Hamilton’s ears, hands, and shoes. The favorite element of the outfit was the ravishing crest towards the top of his suit. The dangling pearls attached to a diamond and ruby bijouterie knocked my socks off of the audience.
- Diana Ross
Diana Ross shuts down the 2025 Met Gala along a hint of fiery flare with her absolutely stunning 18-foot caped shawl. On top of that, her fluffy hat served as a perfect touch to balance out the grandeur of her sparkly dress and jewelry. The only question I have is, how is she possibly 81?
- Zendaya
Whether it is acting, dancing, or fashion, Zendaya never fails to disappoint. This year’s look was simple yet symbolically powerful. Even though the outfit did not have glowing diamonds or the intricate designs as the other celebrities, Zendaya’s hat quickly became the star of the show. With the “Zendaya Hat Theory” circling around fans since 2014, Zendaya wearing her out-of-this-world has sparked humorous rumors about what she might be hiding underneath her hat…
Worst
- Jaden Smith
Jaden Smith’s recent public appearances in odd and uncanny outfits has been making waves in the fashion industry. At the 2025 Met Gala, he wore a tailored black suit with a checkered coat over his shoulders. On the other hand, something odd seemed to be stuck into his hair. Perhaps it was a pile of wires or a jumbled mess of plastic strings, but it sure ruined his attempt at a “Superfine” look.
- Henry Golding
The exquisite pattern on the shiny suit shone like a golden nugget complementary with his luxurious golden chain necklace. The only problem is, the suit isn’t gold, it’s greenish-yellow. Looking closer at Golding’s outfit, it looks more like someone had thrown-up on him over and over again. Hopefully next year he can come back with a cleaner outfit.
- Natasha Lyonne
From the velvet red shoes to the elegant purple gown, this Met Gala look almost looks perfect…until we reach the collar of her dress. With the dark mascara under Lyonne’s eye and the uncomfortable look on her face, the choking collar makes her appear as she is suffocating in that dress.
