Green Wave Hockey Defeats Morristown-Beard Crimson

Chris Whelan, Sports Editor

It was a Wednesday night. Rain was pouring down upon Mennen Arena of Morristown, New Jersey, as students, parents, and alumni packed in the stands. The seas of Morristown were raging on this cold, wet night, and already there were rumors of an unstoppable force about to enter the arena. This force, was the Green Wave.

Delbarton and Morristown Beard took the ice, as the atmosphere in Mennen seemed increasingly energetic. The referees, however, were nowhere to be found, therefore, the teams disappeared back into the locker rooms. So far, the showdown in Morristown seemed to be highly anticlimactic.

Following a sixty-minute wait, the referees arrived, and the puck dropped to kick off the first period. It only took slightly over three minutes of play for Morristown-Beard to draw first blood on a power play. The Green Wave squad settled in, however, and the chilly air at Mennen evoked a foreboding essence in the air. While some Delbarton supporters became anxious after falling behind by one goal, the members of the Green Wave squad knew at that moment… that it was simply calm before the storm.

Suddenly…

Goal. Anthony Farinacci.

Goal. Mark Benemerito.

Goal. Jack Malone.

… All under two minutes.

Delbarton wasn’t close to being finished, however. They Green Wave was still only in the form of a swell.

Farinacci and Malone scored again, and Andrew Longo put the puck in the net to make it 6-1.

To shut the door on Morristown-Beard, Anthony Farinacci completed a hat trick, and Jack Maguire executed the final blow to the Crimson to make it an 8-1 victory for the Green Wave.

Junior Mark Benemerito commented on the flow of the game,

“It was an important statement game for us, and we had a slow start. But once we got going we didn’t stop and playing physical early set the tone for the rest of the game.”

Fellow teammate Michael Gordon noted the large attendance on both sides at Mennen,

“It was exciting playing in front of a crowd that big…Glad we were able to secure a win in such a big rivalry game. Awesome experience and I hope the success of our team can continue into March.”

The Green Wave hockey squad now has momentum, and with continued support from the Delbarton faithful, this season could be one to remember.
