Mr. Kenneth Kane: A New Teacher with a Past to Remember

Mr. Kenneth Kane: A New Teacher with a Past to Remember

Andrew Madonna, Staff Writer

Mr. Kenneth “Kacy” Kane is one of several new additions to the Delbarton faculty for the 2016-2017 school year. He teaches geometry and algebra and coaches the bowling team. Mr. Kane was born in Land-o-Lakes Florida, near the Tampa Bay area. He describes his childhood as “very normal” and “nothing really special.” When Mr. Kane was in high school, he was “average” in the classroom and tried “a little bit of everything” in the way of extra-curricular activities.  Nonetheless, he was captain of the bowling team and ranked seventh in Florida.  Mr. Kane also played as the wide receiver for the football team, ran track, and was even a member of the Chess Team. While he was in high school, his Math teacher wrote everyone in the senior class a note about what she hoped for them and their lives. He can remember all of his friends getting long and detailed letters, but he only got a three word note: “Make a Difference.” Not to anyone one’s knowledge, this teacher had terminal cancer and was resigning from the faculty. It was this event that made Mr. Kane want to become a teacher.

After graduating high school in 1997, Mr. Kane joined the army. He went through basic training and joined the Florida National Guard, serving from 1998-2005. During that time, he ascended the army ranks and became a sergeant. In 2005, Mr. Kane was deployed to Iraq, which he described as a place filled with “memories you will never forget.” Early in his tour of duty, he was riding in a truck that exploded after driving over an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). Much later, he woke up in a German Camp hospital. Given that he did not understand German, he felt that he had permanent brain damage. However, he only got a concussion and lost some ligaments in his left arm. Shortly after he recovered, Mr. Kane was discharged from the army. Mr. Kane got married, had a child, and followed his dream to become a teacher. Given his aptitude in mathematics, he chose to specialize in this subject. He received both a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Masters of Education from the University of South Florida.

In late 2009, Mr. Kane became a geometry teacher in a school in Tampa Bay, Florida. Mr. Kane then moved to New Jersey with his wife, where he now teaches mathematics here at Delbarton! In his free time, Mr. Kane enjoys watching movies (especially Star Wars), playing with his sons and teaching them to punt footballs, and dominating in Clash of Clans on his smartphone. As a teacher, Mr. Kane wants his students to follow three simple phrases: “Be Present, Be Prepared, and Be Polite.” At Delbarton, Mr. Kane is most excited to “influence the lives of young men,” just like his teacher did for him. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Kane to the Delbarton Community.
