A New Hope, Or A Phantom Menace?

It’s been ten years since the release of the last Star Wars movie, and the question on every fan’s mind right now is whether the upcoming new trilogy will be able to match the greatness of the original three movies, or if it will fail to impress like the prequels.

Three years ago in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and immediately set out to make the new trilogy. Even though George Lucas, the mastermind behind the Star Wars franchise, had storylines planned for two more trilogies decades beforehand, Disney decided to scrap them. To whet the collective appetite of the fans, two teaser trailers have been released: one last November, and one this April.

What and who do we know is returning from the original trilogy? Harrison Ford will reprise the role of Han Solo, Mark Hamill will return as Luke Skywalker, and we’ll see Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. Also returning are Chewbacca—everyone’s favorite wookie—and the Millennium Falcon, “the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs!” Mostly, though, there are many new actors, most of whom are virtually unknown in the film industry, hoping for a breakthrough role.

However, Disney made a fatal mistake in attempting to create their own storylines. What made the Star Wars films so unique, unforgettable, and captivating was only achievable because of George Lucas. Disney essentially threw him out the window when they rejected his plots. After Lucas’ biographer read the outlines for all the potential films in the ’80s, he said, “The three most exciting stories were 7, 8, and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these three movies.'” Yet, Disney went with their own plans and eliminated the distinction that the franchise had. Disney’s adaptations could still be fantastic, but they will not be as good as they could have been.

Meanwhile, another Star Wars trailer has shaken a large group of consumers. A month before the release of Episode VII, a new Star Wars video game will be released. This is Star Wars Battlefront, a series that has been virtually inactive since 2005. The game will be multiplayer only, developed by DICE, whose multiplayer gameplay in the Battlefield series has already proven itself among gaming afficianados. The trailer features unheralded graphics and game mechanics that were never explored before, and is even more promising than the movie teasers. While both the movie and this new video game will undoubtedly both be very popular, the Battlefront series is made of sterner stuff and you can expect greater quality from it.
