On November 4th 2025 Mikie Sherrill claimed her place as the 57th Governor of New Jersey. Although many polls believed the race would be close Sherrill won the race decisively winning 1.8 million votes to Jack Citarelli’s 1.4 million. Furthermore Sherrill claimed the state’s most important cities including Paterson, Newark and Trenton. This election was an important bounceback for the Democratic party as Trump gained far more support in the state than expected during the 2024 election. It is important to take a look back on Sherrill’s life and her qualifications while also analyzing the policies she intends to implement.
Rebecca Michele Sherrill grew up in Virginia where she went to school before attending the Naval Academy in Maryland. Inspired by her grandfather, a World War 2 veteran, Mikie graduated in 1994 and became a helicopter pilot. Over her ten years of active duty Sherrill led missions in Europe, the Middle East and even worked with Russian officials to implement nuclear weapons treaties. Her other educational achievements include a Master of Science degree from the London School of economics, a certificate in the Arabic language from the American University in Cairo, and a law degree from Georgetown University. In 2018 she was elected to Jersey’s 11th congressional district which contains parts of Morris, Sussex and Essex counties. During her time in Congress she joined many Moderate Democrat caucus’s while supporting many of the laws that President Biden did. On November 4th 2024 she launched her gubernatorial campaign.
Sherrill’s agenda as governor looks to help New Jersey families by lowering costs and giving power to the people. To start, Mikie announced that she would work to make Jersey more affordable; especially for small businesses, people who can’t afford healthcare and the average person who has to deal with skyrocketing grocery prices. Furthermore Sherrill stated that the affordability problem also bleeds into the housing crisis as the dream of owning a house fades out of view for many Jersites. She believes that the root of the housing problem comes from a lack of supplies and the lack of affordable housing as she has expressed interest in working with real estate companies to build more affordable housing in Jersey. Moving to reproductive rights, Sherrill’s agenda is in support of a woman having the right to choose as she wants to keep power with the people. In education Sherrill has pledged to make an effort to bring back federal funding for public schools; moreover she wants to increase private-tutoring opportunities for children who need it. Finally arguably the biggest part of Mikie’s agenda is her position on energy. Sherrill has vowed that she will declare a state of emergency on her first day as governor to free utility rates. This is not in an effort to make utility rates free but rather to make them cost less as many New Jerseyans are fed up with the high energy costs in the state. Only time will tell if Sherrill’s proposed policies will work but many New Jerseyans are hopeful for a better future.
