Earlier in November of 2025, the world watched as Zohran Mamdani completed his historic run for mayor of New York City. The thirty-four year old Mamdani, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, is set to be the youngest mayor of New York City in over a century.
Originally from Uganda, Mamdani immigrated with his family to New York at the age of seven. He attended high school locally at the Bronx High School of Sciences and then Bowdoin College. In October of 2024, Mamdani officially launched his mayoral bid while still being a relatively unknown State Assembly member. Mamdani’s campaign ran on issues of affordability, including the promises of free city buses and rent freezes. he has the support of US Senator Bernie Sanders (I) of Vermont. Though originally trailing, Mamdani ultimately caught up with former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo in polls, culminating with Mamdani’s upset over Cuomo in the Democratic Primary election.
Mamdani’s status as both a Muslim candidate and a Democratic Socialist has drawn critics across the board. Upon his victory in the primary, President Donald Trump made his stance against Mamdani clear, threatening to cut federal funding to NYC.
On November 4, 2025, Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, garnering over a million votes and fifty percent of the total votes. He defeated Republican Curtis Sliva and Andew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. In his victory speech, before his devout supporters, Mamdani passionately declared NYC to be a city that “has been reborn”.
Relationship with President Trump
In the months leading up to and right after the mayoral election, the relationship between Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump seemed to be a hostile one. The two figures exchanged heated remarks both directly and indirectly. Mamdani declared himself to be “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare”, calling Trump a fascist. In return, Trump called Mamdani a “little communist mayor” and threatened to deploy the National Guard and increase the unpopular ICE operations in New York City. These exchanges led to a meeting between the two to be scheduled — a meeting that many expected to be a hostile one.
Despite this, the two men, to the surprise of many, got along exceptionally well during their meeting on November 21st, with the President remarking that he’ll “be cheering for [Mamdani] and even defending Mamdani from reporters. Moreover, the President showered Mamdani with praise, with both men holding relaxed postures.
What Mamdani’s Victory Means for NYC
Zohran Mamdani’s victory represents a new age in politics, one that’s led by passionate young people rather than tenured politicians. His status as both an immigrant and person of color embodies the hopeful excitement that many New Yorkers share. His proposals, including free buses and rent freezes, if implemented well, have the potential to reshape New York City for the better in years to come. Moreover, his successful meeting recently with President Trump could hint at smooth relations with the White House in the future.
