In an advertisement for USA Hockey, Vegas Golden Knights star Jack Eichel stated that the goal for the tournament was “Canadian Tears.” Just one year ago, team Canada won the Four Nations tournament in a heartbreaker, despite American dominance throughout the game. With the Winter Olympics in Milan, international hockey will appear once more. Milan presents an opportunity for the United States National team to not only get its revenge on Canada, but also to take gold for the first time since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980.
The roster itself has been a topic of serious debate. In net the United States will boast two time Vezina Trophy winner Conor Hellebuyck along with superstar goaltenders in Jeremy Swayman and Jake Oettinger. Despite his resume, Hellebuyck struggles in high pressure situations which puts his status as the starter under question. The US possesses arguably the best defensive core in the tournament with players like Quinn Hughes, Charlie McAvoy and Jacob Slavin. The defense showcases the perfect mix of scoring talent and defensive technique. Notably, the team left out Lane Hutson, who is currently the 4th highest scoring defenseman in the league. The forward core is where the majority of the controversy arises. Currently, Jason Robertson was left off of the national team despite being the leading scorer from the States. Similarly, Cole Caufield was also left off of the team, Caufield currently has 32 goals as of February 3rd. Leaving players like Robertson and Caufield out creates a situation where there is less scoring ability than desired on the team. Team management opted for more grit and experience with players such as J.T Miller and Chris Kreider. Furthermore, management defended their decisions stating, “if you just wanted the top scorers you don’t need a GM.” Many hockey fans strongly disagree with this decision as the main weakness of the team is its firepower in comparison to a team like Canada.
Undoubtedly the main rival of the US going into this tournament is Canada. From the Four Nations Cup last year, to the Golden Goal in 2014, these teams despise each other. Although international hockey rules dictate no fighting, it is almost undeniable that when these two teams face off it will be a chippy, rough and grueling contest. In order for the States to prevail they must take advantage of their superior goaltending while also unlocking the full potential of their highest scorers. Players like Jack Hughes must show up and score if the US is to win, especially considering the firepower deficit to Team Canada. Furthermore, the US defense must also generate significant offense while shutting down elite talents like Conor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
Fans of the US team should be excited for the Olympics. The 2026 roster is the best the US has had in decades, and it finally looks like the team could stand up to the Canadian giant. However, in order to win, the team must take advantage of its goaltending lead while unlocking its star players firepower to win the tournament. When the tournament officially starts on February 5th, we will finally know if this team has what it takes to become champions.
