Superhero Movies have been a staple of Hollywood for more than three decades, but recently they have not been as well received. 2025 was a big year for the Superhero media with a renewed excitement due to recent releases. Marvel released three live actions movies in 2025: Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Captain America: Brave New World. They also released five TV Shows, the highlight of many fans being Daredevil: Born Again. Daredevil: Born Again was very exciting for fans due to Charlie Cox returning to the fan favorite role of Matt Murdock. All three MCU movies were relatively well received with Fantastic Four being by far the best received. DC also had an action packed year with Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) releasing in theaters, launching James Gunn’s brand new DCU. Superman became critically acclaimed and performed the best in theaters and in fan opinions. James Gunn’s new universe also released two TV shows, Peacemaker and Creature Commandos, on HBO Max. Peacemaker served as the sequel to DCEU’s Peacemaker, bringing back the same actors, but showing the differences between the two universes. Creature Commandos was the first official look into the DCU, with a multitude of cameos to flesh out the universe.
Looking Into the Future
Both Marvel and DC have many projects in the works, with trailers being expected to release in the coming months.
Marvel
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will serve as the finale in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. Doomsday will be released in 2026 and Secret Wars will be released in 2027. Spiderman will also have multiple movies being released soon, with Brand New Day and Beyond the Spiderverse being both scheduled for release in 2027. Beyond the Spiderverse will serve as the finale of the Spiderverse trilogy and Brand New Day will be a “ground level” Marvel movie following Tom Holland’s Spiderman and confirmed cameos from Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and a unrevealed character played by Sadie Sink.
DC
Supergirl will be the second theatrical release in James Gunn’s new DC universe. It will follow Kara Zor-El as she traverses the galaxy. James Gunn has stated that Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow was a heavy inspiration in the creation of the script of the movie.
Clayface is the second movie on DCU’s slate, being planned to be released in 2026. Only certain set photos have been leaked, with a trailer release date not being set yet.
Man of Tomorrow will serve as a sequel to Superman, and will see Lex and Superman team up against a larger threat.
The Batman: Part 2 will be the sequel to Matt Reeve’s Batman: Part 1. Not many details have been revealed, but recently there was a leak about Scarlett Johansson joining the cast.
The DCU will also be releasing multiple planned TV Shows on HBO Max such as Creature Commandos Season 2, Lanterns, and Waller.
