Spanish Honors Society and Hurricane Relief

CJ Gasser, Staff Writer

After hearing of the devastation Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused to the Hispanic community and our fellow U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico, The Spanish Honors Society felt it was their responsibility to step up and help. The Spanish Honors Society is a group of students who have earned representation and recognition in the National Spanish Honors Society which is run by Mrs. Jenna Gomez and meets regularly throughout the school year.

After the devastating hurricanes, the NSHS felt compelled to work with a Benedictine School in Puerto Rico. Once communication was established with this school, we began our events and efforts to raise the badly needed funds. We first held a successful empanada and refreshment sale followed by a movie night with multiple schools in the region. Those in attendance enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Men Tell No Tales, starring Javier Barden. To reach our fund-raising goal, we ended the campaign with a dress down day. Ultimately, a great deal of money was raised, and more importantly, spread awareness to the school community. The work done by the Spanish Honors Society is an excellent example of Benedictine hospitality and the Delbarton spirit.

The people in Puerto Rico still lack proper resources, electricity, and essential survival services. This small, yet powerful act done by the NHS is what the world needs more of. The Spanish Honors Society hopes to continue their hospitable efforts, to help make Spanish-speaking regions recover from any natural disaster and or hardship.  I congratulate the Spanish Honors Society on their success and their work to improve the conditions in Puerto Rico.
